Walk of the Month – August 2018
Where to wander this month: Pen-y-ghent
It would be rude to not complete the set, which is why our walk of the month for August is the last of the Three Peaks, Pen-y-ghent.
It may be the shortest of the three, and the easiest to climb, but there are still some scrambles towards the top, so make sure you are dressed suitably.
This classic circuit starts and ends at the National Park car park, and is 6 miles (10km). Turning right out of the car park, follow the road out of Horton, passing a church on your left and crossing over a small stream. Take the minor tarmac path on your left, this should be signposted for the Primary School.
Continue to follow this road as it gently slopes up until you reach some farm buildings, where you will see a stile and sign post for the Penyghent summit on your left.
From here you follow a clear path through fields alongside a wall and up some stone steps, steadily climbing the whole time until you reach a gate at the top where you join the Pennine Way.
Turning left you will reach the steepest parts of the route, before reaching a paved path which leads you gently to the summit, trig point, and shelter.
Once you have had some time on the summit, cross the wall and follow the clear path signposted for Horton, which zig zags down to a stile, after which you reach a junction.
Turning left, you will slowly descend back into the middle of Horton, and then back to the car park to end.
