Celebrate the Summer Solstice in the Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland

As the sun reaches the point where it is at it’s highest on it’s journey around Earth, in the sky and the days stretch longer, the summer solstice is a magical time to explore the stunning landscapes surrounding Wenningdale Escapes.

The longest day of the year offers the perfect opportunity to explore the most scenic areas of the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland, areas for which High Bentham is a gateway town.

Embrace the sunrise at Malham Cove

Why not start your solstice adventure with an early morning walk to Malham Cove? This memorable limestone formation, with its impressive cliff face and unique natural amphitheatre, is a unique feature in the Dales landscape and makes an impressive way to start the longest day. The panoramic views enjoyed after you have summited the cove (the steps are for the faint or weak hearted!) are well work the early start.

Discover the charm of Bolton Abbey

A visit to Bolton Abbey is also a great way to spend the longest day of the year. Nestled along the River Wharfe, this historic estate boasts enchanting ruins, lush woodlands, and tranquil riverside walks. The stepping stones across the river are particularly popular, offering both a fun challenge and a picturesque photo opportunity. Pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely afternoon amidst the abbey’s timeless beauty. This is a much better option for those who are less able or active than walking up to Malham Cove.

Sit on top of the world in the Forest of Bowland

Renowned for its rolling hills, heather-clad moorlands, and rich wildlife, High Bentham is the gateway to the Forest of Bowland and so you have easy access to this National Landscape. Head to ‘Bowland Knott’, which is around 20 minutes drive from Wenningdale Escapes, to watch the sun set whilst you feel like you’re sat on top of the world. If you don’t want to go that far then pack a picnic or a drink and head to ‘Big Stone’, also known as the great stone of Fourstones, which offers equally stunning, panoramic views over High Bentham and beyond.

Witness the sunset from Ingleborough

If you really want to see the day out in style, why not enjoy an evening ascent of Ingleborough, one of the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks? The climb is rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding dales and beyond. Take care and dress sensibly for this hill walk, taking you across traditional Dales terrain but it’s well worth it for the view at the top!
