Walk of the month – Where to wander in Autumn
Where to wander this month: As the weather can be a bit hit and miss through the next few months, we thought we would share a couple of ideas of places to go, to give inspiration for those occasional nice weather walking days. Please make sure to wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather, and remember it can change drastically in a short period of time, especially if you are gaining elevation in our surrounding hills.
Heysham Coast Trail – Heysham is a coastal village overlooking Morecambe bay, and is a 40 minute drive from Riverside. There is a 1.5 mile circular trail there which takes you through the village, along the cliffs and explores the villages history. Areas of interest are the remains of St. Patrick’s Chapel with its stone graves, and Heysham barrows, once home to a go-kart track where it is said Nigel Mansell started his career. Please be aware that the path is unsurfaced along the clifftop. There are cafes and shops in the village should you want refreshments, as well as parking and toilets. For more information, and to see the trail route, see National Trust
Stainforth and Catrigg force – Stainforth is a small village a couple of miles out of settle. From Stainforth you can do a 2 mile loop trail taking you through woodland, fields and along lanes, with some steep climbs and stiles. Your reward for the steep climbs will be panoramic views of the Yorkshire Three Peaks (on a clear day of course). There is also Catrigg Force waterfall, which leads off from point 5 on the trail map. On your return to Stainforth, why not pop into the Craven Heifer for a drink and a bite to eat. For the trail map see Visit the dales
Note- this walk can get muddy through the woodland
